Here are some helpful tips to help you decide if your chili is still palatable:
1. Ask someone.
- If someone recalls you eating chili last night and leaving it out on the counter, it means you ate chili last night and left it out on the counter. Eat with caution.
- If you can’t get a witness, proceed to step 2.
2. Check the temperature.
- If your chili is room temperature that means it’s been sitting out all night. Eat with caution.
- If your chili is still chilled, eat up pal.
3. Go to the tapes.
- Check your home surveillance tapes (if your home is not equipped with a state of the art security system, skip to step 4). If the tapes show you leaving chili on the counter, it means you left your chili on the counter last night. Eat with caution.
- If your tapes show someone else leaving your chili on the counter, it means you have someone in your household that doesn’t respect chili. Give them their walking papers, stat.
4. Know your nose.
- Take a whiff. If it smells like dirty kakis and crooked politicians, sorry to inform you, your chili is whack. Eat with caution.
- If it smells like chili, it is chili. Eat up pal.
5. Test dummy (should only be used as a last resort.)
If you have a pet, small child or elderly person in the house, have them ‘sample’ a spoonful of your latest masterpiece. Wait 10-15 minutes for your results.
- If they fall ill, lose consciousness or begin to vomit…you’ve got some bad chili my friend. Eat with caution.
- If they applaud your delicious creation, you didn’t leave it on the counter overnight. Eat up pal.
There you have it. By utilizing those 5 simple tips, you will never be unsure if you left your chili out on the counter overnight again. So eat up my friends, or don’t, depending on the results of your investigation.
Cheers.
I usually poke my chili with a stick. If it still looks like chili afterwards then I eat it. From there I let the Chili Gods control my fate.
