"Wow it smells good in here."
Those where the first words uttered as we walked in the door.
The place was a little bit like a zoo, which was to be expected. And like on a visit to the zoo, this guy was excited to be there.
After hanging our coats on the racks, we moved into the closest booth and thus began our chili journey.
I tasted all of the vegetarian fare, and here are my awards. (each chili pictured below it's respective award)
Pachyderm Prize.
This award is going to the best presentation. This year my vote goes to Bunker's for the amazingness that was their breadbowl'd chili. This mini breadbowl had my mouth watering before I ever took a bite. For a "sample" the portion size was huge, and the fancy sour cream sauce (I'm no chef) was simply perfect. It didn't hurt that the chili itself was amazing. If I had a local joint that served this up on a daily basis, I would really have a hard time not eating it a few days a week.
The Penguin Award.
This bad boy goes to the chili that that was a little outside the norm, but amazing for it (outside of the emu, what bird is stranger then the penguin). The recipient for this fest is The Fast Foodie who brought some amazing Indian Curry Chili. This mini-cup of delicious had a perfect balance of spice and didn't punch you in the face with the curry flavor. It was exactly what Curry Chili should be.
The Crazy-Uncle Monkey Award. The best in show.
So, every once in a while, while at the zoo, you get to witness something you didn't expect. Something so profound that it starts to change the way you feel about an animal, and maybe even yourself. I witnessed one such event, and it was by far the best zoo experience I have ever had.
It's no secret that that monkey house is the best part of the zoo. If you are lucky enough to get there at the right time, you'll see the monkeys jumping around and playing. I however got to witness something far greater then a few monkeys playing a game, I got to witness "The Crazy-Uncle Monkey."
The Crazy-Uncle was a wiry haired fellow. His coat was a bit of a mess, and his eyes seemed to shift as if he was in a constant state of paranoia. He was tailed around by a little adorable male monkey that pretty much followed him everywhere.
They made their way to an area that was littered with play toys of sorts, including a 2 foot or so diameter red ball. It was at/to this ball that I witnessed the Crazy-Uncle teach his small friend how to hump (and quite ravenously I must say). After going to town, he then stepped aside and allowed his nephew to give it a shot, only to step in time and time again as if saying "no no, you do it like this".
Where am I going with this? Honestly at this point, I have no idea. I think I just wanted to relive that story in my mind again because it was hilarious. I mean, it was a monkey teaching another monkey how to hump a ball, can you blame me?
So anyway, lets get back to business.
In my opinion the best veg-chili of the day was curated by Mulligan's Irish Pub and Grill. They filled my miniature plastic cup with what was an absolutely treat. They started with some piping hot smokey white bean chili and garnished it with a salsa, and an oblong chip. Everything just worked together. I could eat this chili any day of the week, even Wednesday, which traditionally is the chili day of rest. I don't see the item on the Mulligans website, but if I find out it's there, I'll go out of my way to NOM down some of this nectar-of-the-gods again.
